A Re-Purposed Country Potato and Onion Bin

May 24, 2013
I bought this pine potato and onion bin last weekend at a garage sale.

Cute, but just a little dated for my style.

 I painted the bin white,

And planted a crock with double inpatiens for the top.

The bottom drawer has a small aluminum loaf pan planted with moss roses.

(I should mention that I can grow impatiens in part sun as long as I keep them watered)

I am so happy to be outside, planting and finally trying out all the ideas that I dreamed up during our long winter!

Thanks for reading my blog, Carlene

  1. Such a great idea. I need to remember this, because I do see these occasionally. But I found a treasure today...coming soon!

  3. Hmmm...I see pieces like that quite often. Never even considered using them as planters. Great idea!

  4. It looks completely different painted a nice clean white. It will be even prettier when the flowers fill out. Enjoy the long (hopefully sunny) weekend, Carlene!

  7. I have one of these in my kitchen...I've wanted to do something different with it for a while...my doesn't have a painted scene...instead it is carved 'TATERS' on the lid!

But having it with the lid opened as a planter wouldn't matter...nope!
    Pure genius!
    Thanks...:P

  8. Really clever Carlene ... Love it. Glad you are finally free from all the snow and can get out in the yard and play in the dirt. Great start with that potato bin. Thanks for sharing this idea.

  9. Such a cute piece Carlene. Love it as a planter! I have found that same thing with impatiens. I had moss rose reseed and come up all over in my front garden beds last year. Nice surprise. Seeing a few popping up again.

  10. My husband use to make these and sell them and I still have mine and still use it. This is a great idea if I do decide to stop using it as a potato and onion bin. Thanks for the idea!

  13. I could actually use a designated place for my taters and onions. Hand it over.

  14. Funny, I like the painted scene, but sometimes, I question my taste...however, I couldn't help but think, that someday, our grandchildren will be whooping it up when they find those country painted pieces we painted over. Everything is such a cycle. When I was young, I thought my aunt had a screw loose with her aluminum Christmas tree. Now, I would adore having it!
To Corn in My Coffee Pot- use some wood filler to get rid of the carving of "potatoes."
