Laura Made Me Do It

April 16, 2013
I love Laura's blog Finding Home.

She has the coolest antiques scattered all over her beautiful home, and the best gallery walls.  If you haven't taken the home tour on Laura's blog, I highly suggest it.

I collect vintage kitchen utensils, (among other things!).

I display them in the kitchen.
In a pitcher.

Or in an old wooden box.

But Laura uses what I think are wooden "mashers" so cleverly in her vignettes in any room.
Don't you love Laura's wood masher on the left side of this vignette?  She is showcasing her fabulous barnwood stencil here of course, but I noticed the masher too.

Also mashers in this vignette.  I must have a masher, or two...

The mashers, unlike wooden spoons, can stand by themselves, and they have an architectural presence.

I'm off to find some mashers...

Well I found one at an antique shop.  They had two but were practically identical and I wanted them a different height or shape.

I did find this at a thrift shop.

Ironing board cover fasteners in the original vintage packaging for $.50.  I thought they may be fun in my laundry room.

Back to the masher.

Here it is.  I paid $8 for it.  It has a nice aged patina.

This snowshoe shelf is in our den.  Maybe you remember it from Christmas.

Here is the masher with vintage toys.

Here it is added to a spring vignette.

Here it is laying on its side.

I will be on the lookout for more mashers.  I think they kind of round out a vignette, like old spools or bobbins do.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".

Thanks, Laura.

Thanks for reading my blog, Carlene

  5. Yes, it adds a nice touch. I like the patina of old wooden pieces ~ kitchen items, rulers, trays, etc. '-)

  20. Good Afternoon Carlene, I enjoyed seeing your masher, it has been well used and well loved. I do not have an old masher, but I have one which I bought in India. It looks very similar to yours and is used for grinding rice into a paste.
    Have a lovely day,
    Best Wishes

  23. I'll have to check out Laura's blog. I've slowly been collecting old utensils too. They must be pretty popular because an antique store near me now has tons of old utensils. Some are cheap but others are way too expensive. If it is old and cheap, I usually will buy it. I haven't really found a way to use them yet, but my collection is rather small.

Oh and shame on you for showing those toy irons. I used to have one or two of those when I was a child back in the 80s. Now those are vintage???? This kind of makes me feel the same way I did last week at the antique store when I saw telephones wth the headset on a cord. I felt OLD! Hee hee.

    Have a great weekend!

  24. Hi Carlene, I am not familiar with Laura's blog. I'll have to hop over and say 'hi'. Love your new found masher. None here at the Olson house. Sure wouldn't pass one up if I ran across it. Great displays! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
