Book Page Tree & Jute Filled Ornaments

October 30, 2012
I'm sure you have seen the book page and sheet music crafts on Pinterest, blogland, and magazines.

I purchased this magazine recently, and decided to try the Better Homes and Gardens' Book Page Christmas Tree tutorial with my own twist.

It's a pretty good magazine. Miss Mustard Seed's Christmas decorations are featured.

As you can see in the BHG photo above, they used a terra cotta pot and a wood skewer for the tree trunk. They did not put cardboard spacers between each paper like other book page trees on Pinterest that were Anthro inspired. (Too much work!)

I started with a terra cotta pot that had some lime deposits and didn't need aging. I did wash it though.

Here I am tracing the top of the terra cotta pot onto sheet moss.

I bought these mug plug styrofoam pieces at Jo Ann Fabrics. I had to cut a little off to fit it in the pot. I didn't glue it in, so I could use the pot again. It stays in pretty snugly.

I used a twig cut from a tree outside. I whittled the top a little to make it sharp enough to push the book pages onto it. I had some wood skewers, but they were not very long, and I liked the idea of the bark showing between the book pages.

Next I made templates from cardboard. I started with a 4 1/2" square and went down a half inch each template.

Then I laid the template on my book page and tore along the edges.

I put the squares in piles. They definitely were not super neat along the edges, and I didn't really count how many I made. I stacked the squared up in a pile to see about how high they would be on my stick.

Then I started putting on the book pages and spinning them so they did not line up evenly.

Instead of leaving it pointed or putting a round wood ball on top as some have done on their book page trees, I added a rusty metal star tied around the stick with jute. I clipped the whittled top of the stick off so it wasn't so sharp.

And, here it is. I fussed a little getting the book pages staggered somewhat evenly.

Now I can cross the book page Christmas tree off of my to do list.

Do you see the jute filled clear ball ornaments next to the book page tree? Another Pinterest inspiration.

I purchased the clear glass balls on clearance for $1.49.

I used three sized of jute.

I think they are kinda fun.

Another inspiration done on my to do list. Now I might go buy another box of those $1.49 clear balls and fill them with sheet music strips... (but that's another day and another post).

  3. I've evidently been living under a rock as I haven't seen any of that! I love it and now have a use for those old Reader's Digest Condensed books I've been lugging around for years.
I love the way you did yours with the star! If you wanted you could even spray paint if you wanted color and on the filled ornaments I cold use all those yarn scraps I have! You know I like color! LOL! But I have so much color that sometimes plain items show up better and I do like the trees the way you did them. Love your banner too!

I love this tree! Now it will next on my list of 'to do's'. Thanks for showing us how to make it. Next week I am pretty busy, but think I'll start getting squares ready. Love the branch instead of a dowel. I am making a wreath with book page squares.
